Individuals who dream to become taller have interesting news. An orthopedic surgeon in Shanghai has pioneered a ‘height gain’ surgery. In this operation, the surgeon cuts through the fibula and tibia below the individual’s knee without disturbing the bone marrow.
The bones start regenerating about 7 days after the surgery. Heavy braces weighing around a pound are tightened to the inner parts of the legs. These braces are made of titanium or nickel. The treatment continues for about four months where the surgeon expands the braces gradually and stretches the leg. The patient can gain about six to eight cm of height during this process. A number of successful surgeries of this sort have been performed on patients between the ages of 14 and 55. People from various nationalities including Japanese, Americans, Chinese and Germans who were psychologically affected because they were short have undergone this surgery. Records state that about 3,000 operations of height increase has been conducted so far.
Gaining height by lengthening the legs is not a new process. It started as early as the 1950s in Russia. Then the technique spread to china. However, the success rates of the surgery were not very high.
Sometimes, the results were pretty catastrophic. In the older technique, about three points of the leg were cut. The bone marrow was affected during this process.
