Knee pain and swelling is an extremely common complaint, and there are many causes. Arthritis is among the most common causes of knee pain. Other conditions that may cause knee pain are bursitis, dislocating kneecap, Baker’s cyst, gout, ligament injuries, and cartilage injuries. Now, let us discuss the anatomy of the knee.

The knee is the largest joint in the body and it is also one of the most complex. The knee joint’s main function is to bend and straighten. The knee, more than just a simple hinge, however, also twists and rotates.
The knee joint is made up four bones – the femur, the tibia, the fibula, and the patella. The femur is the large bone in the thigh, and the tibia is the large shin bone. The fibula is the smaller shine bone, which is located next to the tibia. The patella, also known as the knee cap, is the small bone in the front of the knee, which slides up and down in a groove in the femur as the knee bends and straightens. These four bones are connected by muscles, ligaments, and tendons. The knee joint is a synovial joint, which goes to say that it is enclosed by a ligament capsule and contain synovial fluid that lubricates the joint. As you can see, the important parts of the knee include bones and joints, ligaments and tendons, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels.
Aside from being one of the most complex, the knee is also more likely to be injured than is any other joint in the body. We tend to ignore our knees until something happens to them that causes pain. Here, now, are the different methods for managing knee pain and swelling: rest, ice and heat application, stretching, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and cortisone injections.
You will realize that in treating many types of knee pain, a common goal is to break the inflammatory cycle.
