Get Rid Of Your Knee Pain Problems – Improve Your Knee Stability with a Knee Brace

Get Rid Of Your Knee Pain Problems and Improve Your Knee Stability

How severe is your knee pain?  While many people tend to believe that a horrible knee injury, or bad knee pain can only be relegated to the realm of the athlete, it is just as likely for an average person to have a knee injury as the result of some unfortunate accident.  Do all knee injuries require orthopedic knee surgery of some kind?

knee braceDo one or both of the next two examples sound like an unfortunate circumstance that you can relate to?    Consider the two case studies that follow – one, an athlete who was injured while playing sports, the other a working single mother who accidentally discovered she had a degenerative condition with her knee.

  • Case Study 1 – Hector Hector had been playing soccer since he was 10 without any major injuries until his freshman year in college. As impressive as this feat is, everything changed in one particular game. While running in to block a kick from a member of the opposing team, Hector’s right leg hit the ground improperly causing a horrible knee injury that had him being taken from the field on a stretcher. An x-ray revealed that his fractured patella (kneecap) was still intact but the trauma had severely weakened it resulting in a tremendous amount of pain. Moreover, he injured his ACL, MCL, and meniscus. After his surgery was finished, Hector spent nearly eleven months in PT and used a knee brace to help support his knee while it healed. His recovery was long and painful, but he was eventually able to take the soccer field once again. – Hector attributed his recovery to the knee brace because the great support that it provided, without it he would have really been lost.
  • Case Study 2 – Michelle Michelle was on her way into her office after lunch on a rainy Friday afternoon when she lost her footing on the slippery cement. When she dusted herself off, and got back up again, she realized that she could not put any weight on her left leg – her knee was in excruciating pain. Imagining some horrible knee injury, she had a coworker take her to the hospital. That is when she found out that her injury was minor but it had aggravated a degenerative condition that she had spent most of her life unaware of. Michelle was fortunate to find out about her knee problems when she did though; using a knee support for the next couple days was all she needed to start feeling better and she was wise to keep it around when she felt a flare up coming on.

There aremany ways that you can injure your knees ranging from simple sprains and strains to fractures and tears that require reconstruction surgery and years of physical therapy. While we have all had sore knees at one time or another, it is important to understand that any injury should be diagnosed and treated by a doctor. To do otherwise is to risk potential permanent damage and even increase the pain to your knee.

If you have painful knees you should consider the use of a knee brace. The extra stability that a brace can provide to you can do wonders for your knee, and can have you looking back, wondering what you did without one.   If you think you could benefit from improved stability and reduced knee pain then you should check one out today.

Tips On Using Knee Braces for Knee Pain Treatment

Tips On Using Knee Braces for Knee Pain Treatment

What makes the knee very important is that it is the largest joint in the human body. Over time however, even the largest and strongest joints will begin to break down.  As a result, even the strongest people may experience joint pains later on in their lives.

Types of Sprains

knee braceA sprain happens when the muscles which connect your bones together are strained. Obviously, this results in a lot of pain, however if the strain were very serious, a temporary inability to walk may also be probable.

Second and third degree sprains are the worst of them all. These kinds of sprains don’t just have strained ligaments, they are actually torn. Healing the damage will take weeks and quite a bit of physical therapy, but sometimes, surgery may be considered an option especially if the damage is deteriorating.

Signs of Knee Pain

In addition to knee pain there are other signs that can point to knee trouble.

  • Swelling
  • Inability to Walk
  • The Sound of Grating
  • Numbing
  • Discoloration

Best Knee Brace

But even though there are plenty of options for dealing with knee pain, perhaps the most practical solution could be a good knee brace. And although they do have their limits, using them can be imperative if you want to prevent further damage to your knees.

Medical knee braces aside though, there are other  types of braces to help you with pain relief. Sports knee braces are perhaps the most common. They come in various types, including “basketball knee braces” and “football knee braces.” Using these braces in combination with other knee pain remedies is the fastest way of treating your joint muscles back to health.

As far as costs go, most knee braces are reasonably affordable. Provided you know where to buy online, you can easily get a good price on your knee brace. A good place to start your search would be with online shops and medical supplies sites with brace credentials.

Perhaps the best thing about knee braces as knee pain treatments is that they are very simple. Unlike medication or even surgery, a medical brace only requires you to wear it for a given amount of time. Most people who suffer from joint pains already use them, so there’s no point in getting worked up about using them. Knee pains and arthritis are problems which happen to almost every person. But with the help of a medical knee brace, treating it will be a lot easier.

Knee Pain Relief – Knee Braces for Running. Can They Help?

Knee Pain Relief -  Knee Braces  for Running. Can They Help?

When a person runs their knees absorb a lot of force. The stress of this impact can be felt whether you are an experienced runner, or you just run to stay in shape.

Any runner is aware of the constant stress that is placed on the knees and the injuries that can keep you from your favorite pastime. As a result, you may be looking right now for a way to address your pain so that you can continue on with running. A well designed knee brace can help support your knee while running and can help greatly reduce your knee pain. These supports do not have to be astronomically priced, and can be the answer that you are looking for.

Runners have special needs when it comes to knee braces. Not only does your knee brace need to address your specific needs, it also need not be bulky. Our advice is that you should not just focus on the sport of running, although this is important. We suggest that you should think about your knee injury first, and second comes the sport of running. (After speaking with your physician, you will know what your knee injury level is)

Often times people will get confused, thinking that there is just one kind of running knee brace, when in actuality there are many that primarily focus on the severity of your knee pain or knee injury. Usually, runners will complain of pain from a form of arthritis, meniscus, or ligament injury.

For example, osteoarthritis can prevent your knee from being in proper alignment. The pain from this malalignment can be espcially noticeable when you run. OA (osteoarthritis) knee supports can help this issue by maintaining proper knee alignment.

Meniscus injuries are also common problems for runners, as well as injuring your ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), or MCL (Medial collateral ligament). Injuring your ACL, MCL, or meniscus can be very painful, and usually requires a good running knee brace to help promote healing. Most likely, if you have one of these knee injuries, you will need a knee brace that has a hinge, as well as medial and lateral uprights. These will help prevent excessive side to side movements that can be painful. A well designed knee support can help prevent any future damage or tearing from occurring as well.

Non-custom knee braces for running can provide exceptional support as well. Sometimes people think that the only knee brace that will serve them is a custom one. We are here to tell you that this is not always the case. Typically, the only time you will need a custom knee support is if your knee anatomy is uncommon. This is usually not a problem for most people. The biggest difference between custom and non-custom knee braces is usually the price. Non-custom knee supports can really help support your knee without costing you a ton of cash (ie. you can several hundred dollars with non custom knee braces).

Arthroscopic Knee Surgery & The Benefits an ACL Knee Brace Can Provide a

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which a physician uses an arthroscope to evaluate or to treat meniscus injuries, for the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and to treat cartilage microfracturing.

The arthroscope (one of the the surgical tools used in the surgery) is inserted into the knee joint through a small incision that your physician will make. An arthroscope a tool that helps to provide an image for visual inspection and photography of the surgery. This incision is approximately 4 mm (1/8 inch) in length. A second small incision is then made to allow for the surgical instrument, that will be used to work on the affected area in your knee. As a result of using surgical instruments that are smaller than traditional instruments, the procedure can be monitored.
knee immobilizer

As a result of being less invasive, this procedure can reduce recovery time and can increase the success rate of the procedure. The success rate can rise because there is less trauma done to the joint and its connective tissues. Since it is a less invasive procedure there is also less scarring. In order to make "surgical space" the knee joint will be distended by the use of irrigation fluid. This fluid can sometimes leak into the surrounding soft tissue and cause edema (swelling).

One of the benefits of arthroscopy is that most patients can return home, walking with a pair of crutches the same day, or within 24 hours. Many times people will ask how long it will take to heal, and this depends on the the reasons why surgery was needed in the first place. Was it an ACL reconstruction, or a meniscus tear? These two different procedures will vary in recovery time. – A person’s physical condition will also be a factor to consider in regards to recovery time. It is important to listen to your physician, but is not uncommon for athletes in good physical condition to return to normal athletic activities within a few weeks of the procedure. (See your physician for details).

The use of a knee brace after this kind of procedure is a good idea. Although thee procedures are minimally invasive, the reconstructed ACL, for example can benefit from a knee support. These knee braces are significant because the support that they provide may be the difference needed to prevent a future knee surgery. Why take chances after your surgery?

Knee Support Brace

This article contains information about when a knee support brace is most useful.

Best Knee Brace – When Is A Knee Support Most Useful?

Are you curious as to when a knee brace is useful?

Are you wondering when you should wear one?

Let’s give you some information to help clear things up…

Your physician may recommend that you use a knee brace due to an injury you may have sustained. Maybe you have an older knee brace and you are looking for a new one, but are not sure which one to get.
sports knee brace
Knowing your injury, or your diagnosis is vital to choosing the best knee brace for your purposes. Knowing your diagnosis or injury is also helpful to determine when to wear your knee brace.

Injuries may be the result of a sudden athletic incident, or many micro incidents may add up to a larger injury. A knee brace can be a useful adjunct to your recovery from such an incident. Knee braces do help to increase your knee stability and can help promote healing.

How is the promotion of healing achieved? As a result of supporting your knee and keeping it in more proper alignment, a knee brace will help stabalize your knee. A knee brace also helps to provide stability to your knee by helping to limit painful and destructive movements that will continue to insult an already injured knee.

There are other reasons why knee braces are useful…

Knee braces are often used for protection purposes. If you play intense contact sports, such as football, protective knee braces can be extremely helpful. For instance, football linemen who may fall to the ground during play, may have another large opposing player fall on their knee the wrong way. A knee brace will help to resist such destructive injuries.

For purposes of rehabilitation, a knee brace can also be useful. For example, once you have had a surgery, your knee may be temporarily unstable. The ligaments, muscles, and bones may be healing, and as a result you will need some external support to make sure nothing sets back your recovery period. Moreover, you may go through an active rehabilitation process with a physical and/or occupational therpist. Due to the fact that you will be pushed to perform physically, a knee brace can help you feel more stable. This is very important when you are in a more vulnerable position.

A person should never overuse or misuse a knee brace. It is important that a person does not use a knee brace as a crutch. Knee braces are very, very useful, but at the same time, a person must also realize that they are not invinceable with one on.

Orthopedic Knee Braces

Knee braces (also called knee pads or knee supports) have  not only become the primary protective gear to assist numerous knee joint problems but are also used to help prevent knee injuries and for support following orthopedic knee surgery. Knee braces are used extensively in sports medicine to help injured athletes. Knee braces generally fall into two categories, functional and commercial knee braces.

Functional braces have become the preferred support for people suffering from an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tear, ligament damage and several other knee injuries.  They are used to take the strain from the injured part basically allowing the knee to work as it would if it wasn’t damaged.  Many people who use functional braces can continue many activities and sometimes postpone knee surgery. Functional braces do have some limitations and are not recommended for use in strenuous situations. Even though they could never be considered a  lasting alternate to the knee’s own ligaments, they can give much needed stability to the knee and in many situations provide more than adequate support, certainly being more helpful than not using a brace at all.
kneebrace
If you are contemplating using a functional knee brace you should firstly consult your health care professional. Whether or not to use a brace depends on several factors e.g. which ligament has been damaged, which sport the person wishes to undertake, whether any knee rehabilitation has been done and so forth.  It is important for the injured person to realise that although a functional knee brace may prevent further injury it will probably not do much to speed up the healing process of the knee.  Proper rehabilitation including knee strengthening exercises and physical therapy will never be superseded by using a knee brace.

Some athletes, however, use knee braces to help prevent injury even though there have not been any studies that show definite results that they are effective in doing this.  There does appear to be less MCL (medial collateral ligament) tears in athletes using braces even though this cannot definitely be attributed to the braces solely.  There has been some concern that using a brace to prevent injury could actually increase the risk of injury as it may reduce knee movement. Studies have disproved thistheory where the brace has been correctly and professionally fitted.

There are several commercial knee braces on the market.  Probably the best known brand is Futuro.  Their knee support is made to provide solid and comfortable support for people who have weak muscles, tendons or ligaments and help to stop any injury. With the Futuro brace knee movement is not hindered and so it does not have to be solely for use during sporting activities but can provide help anytime the user feels he or she needs a bit of extra support.

Magnetic Wave Knee Support provides support with the addition of Magnetic therapy. It is available in several sizes and has magnets sewn into the material. For treating aches, sprains and similar problems, the HoMedic Knee Support is very good as it allows the user to apply heat or cold therapy to the affected area. If knee arthritis is a problem then relief can be obtained with the Mueller Sport Care Knee Support Open Patella.  It is also helpful for minor sprains and strains. This brace is designed to retain body heat to assist lower pain. It helps preserve knee flexibility. It has an open patella and adjustable straps. It is made from stretch nylon and provides a comfortable fit and is simple to put on and remove.

There are several other types of knee braces including Tese braces that reduce pressure on the knee joints, braces for use after knee surgery to immobilise the knees and special braces for arthritic conditions.
