The principal symptom associated with Chondromalacia is pain in the front of the knee. Frequently the front of the knee can feel sensitive accompanied by a dull ache. Many health articles indicate that the first time a person realizes that they have osteoporosis is when a fracture occurs, often without a slip or fall. As these symptoms do not usually occur at the early stage of the condition, it is sometimes difficult to detect.

What is Osteoporosis?

Most health articles describe osteoporosis as a condition that causes thinning of weakening of the density of bone mass. Often covered in menopause information, osteoporosis means a person will have weaker bones and a higher risk of bone fracture. It is not arthritis, which leads to problems in joints due to cartilage wear. Rather, it is a problem of the bone and its ability to support the weight of your body.

Type II is due to aging and calcium deficiency over long periods of time. While generally assumed they are typical menopause symptoms, Type II occurs in both men and women.

What it the cause?

Both men and women reach their peak bone mass in the third decade of life. After that, bone mass gradually and steadily decreases. In pregnant and lactating women, the rate of bone mass will temporarily decrease when the increased calcium demands of pregnancy or breast-feeding are not met by increased dietary intake of calcium. Menopause symptoms also show a significant decrease of bone mass in the immediate post-menopausal period.

Women are especially prone to developing thin bones because they don’t develop as much bone while younger and the rate of bone loss in women is greater than men. Because of this, health articles indicate age and gender are the most important risk factors for developing osteoporosis.

Other important risk factors that may contribute to developing osteoporosis include northern European ancestry, hypothyroidism, anti-convulsive medications, and a sedentary lifestyle. Americans are especially prone – the exact cause of this is not known. We do know that this is not entirely related to ancestry as studies have shown that individuals that integrate into the United States from other countries develop an American’s higher risk of osteoporosis.

How is osteoporosis diagnosed?

The most useful test is called bone densitmetry or dexa scan. While this test does require special equipment, it was proven safe, however, exposes the patient to small amounts of radiation that is useful for detecting early osteoporosis.

What is the Treatment?

There are three major treatments, which include exercise, nutrition supplementation (up to 1500 mg. of calcium supplement daily), and medication. Since often included in menopause symptoms, hormonal replacement therapy, or HRT, helps maintain and potentially increase bone mass after menopause. While there are other side effects to HRT, such as uterine and breast cancer, blood clots, and strokes, estrogen (or HRT therapy) may be effective.

In summary, it is of the utmost importance that all individuals (especially women) remain active to help maintain strong bones. Even simple forms of exercise, like walking or aerobics, help significantly. Maintaining adequate calcium intake and potentially HRT should be considered.

Knee pain is more than a mild discomfort;  knee pain effects everything you do whether you are sitting, walking, or running .  Knee pain can be e a significant burden and has an effect  on your daily life and activities; many times causing you to become a ‘couch potato’ because it hurts to move.


knee jointYou have four types of joints in your body;  fixed, pivot, ball-and-socket, and hinge.   Your knees are the largest hinge joints in your body and work much like the hinge on a door, allowing the joint to move backward and forward.  They are also the most complex.  In addition to bending and straightening, then twist and rotate.  This makes them especially vulnerable to damage, which is why they sustain more injuries on average than do other joints.

Other structures in the knee include tendons (the fibrous bands of tissue that connects the muscles to the bones),  meniscus (the cartilage  which curves around the inside and outside of your knee, and cushions your knee joint, and bursae (fluid-filled sacs surrounding your knee and help cushion your knee joints so the ligaments and tendons slide across it smoothly.

When all of these structures work together, all is good and we have no knee pain:  We don’t give knee pain a second thought.

What is the best way to treat chronic knee pain?

Two things:

  • Lower the amount of pressure on your joints and ligaments to keep from grinding away at the delicate tissues;

Fortunately there is a multitude of joint pain remedies to choose from. Some are available over the counter at your pharmacy while others require a doctor’s prescription. Some of the symptoms of common knee injuries are swelling, soreness and stiffness.  I’m sure most of us have experienced one or more of these symptoms.  Knee injury diagnosos should be left to the professionals.  If you suffer from any sort of knee pain do not try to diagnose it yourself but see your doctor.

Why are our knees so prone to injury especially to knee ligament injuries?

Knees are prone to injury for several reasons: they are extremely complicated being made up of tendons, cartilage, bone and ligaments, they take a lot pounding by our body and by what we do.  They are load bearing and are subject to damage from falls and knocks.

Some of the symptoms and causes of the more common knee injuries are listed below.

Symptom:  The knee is swollen, sore to touch and painful when moved.
Cause:  Possible torn cartilage or torn ligaments or the ligament or cartilage under the knee cap has softened.

Cause:  Possible torn hamstring.

Symptom:  The knee is sore all the time, the knee joint is hard to move and the knee is unstable when weight is put on it. 
Cause:  Possible torn meniscus.  The meniscus is the cushioning cartilage at the ends of the bones in the knee joint.

Symptom:  A dull ache in the knee accompanied by swelling.
Cause:  Possible damage to the articular cartilage.  Sometimes this is caused by a bodily injury or plain old wear and tear.

Symptom:  Instability of the knee which may tend to give way when weight is placed on it, the knee makes a "popping" sound, swelling of the knee and soreness when standing that may actually prevent you from doing so.
Cause:  Possible anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury or Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury.  ACL knee injury is more common.  Out of interest, this is the common injury we hear a lot about in dogs.

Symptom:  The knee changes in shape.
Cause:   Possible fracture inside the knee or torn ligaments.

Symptom:  Swelling of the knee, pain in the knee joint, the knee is unstable when weight is put on it and reduced mobility.
Cause:  Hyperextension of the knee joint. A common injury in many sports that involve jumping and turning where the knee joint is forced to extend past it’s usual straightened position.  This can occur due to heavy bodily contact or simply by landing awkwardly.

Symptom: Long term pain, stiffness and swelling of the knee joint.  These symptoms are often worse in the colder months.
Cause:  Possible osteoarthritis.

Symptom:  Swelling at the back of the knee.
Cause:  Possible Bakers Cyst.

Symptom:  Soreness and swelling and the kneecap is painful to touch and you are aged somewhere between 12 and 18 years.
Cause:  Possible Osgood-Schlatter Disease.  Many males are affected by this when they have growth spurts in their teenage years.

Symptom:  Acute pain between the shinbone and the kneecap when participating in strenuous activities like running or jumping with the pain persisting after the activity.
Cause:  Possible Tendinitis, an injury to the tendon that joins the kneecap to the shinbone and usually caused by excessive strenuous activities.

Symptom:  Pain in the knee and a grinding feeling when the knee joint is moved.  The knee sometimes locks up.
Cause:  Possible torn cartilage.

Although these are quite common knee injuries, it does not mean they should be ignored.  If you suffer from any of these symtoms then I recommend you consult your medical practitioner to get treatment for knee pain.

Common Knee Injuries

Knee injuries are on of the most common injuries.  Here is information on common knee injuries and how to avoid them.

Despite its size and appearance the knee joint is structurally not very strong and is therefore prone to many injuries.
The knee’s main function is to act as a hinge and to absorb shock when doing things such as running, walking, kicking etc.  It is the muscles, ligaments and tendons around the knee that actually hold the knee together and give it stability.

A common knee injury is knee sprain and can occur if the knee is wrenched or twisted or subjected to a severe blow.  Unfortunately ligaments are not overly flexible although they are quite strong and are subject to tearing.  In extreme circumstances the ligaments may actually pull completely away from the bone.

Another common knee injury is a torn cartilage.  This can occur when the knee is weight bearing and then subjected to a sudden twist or movement.  Wear and tear over a long period of time can also damage the cartilage.  Arthritis is a common precursor to knee pain as it can damage the cartilage and cause considerable pain.

One of the biggest causes of knee injuries is overuse.  Runners are prone to this sort of problem because of the stresses they put on their knees.  As mentioned earlier one of the functions of the knee is to act like a shock absorber.  Overuse can cause the shock absorber to wear away and break down.  Because this is a gradual process it is often not diagnosed until it is quite serious.  Runners know this as "runner’s knee". 

Overuse of muscle tendons can cause tendonitis.  The pain of tendonitis is caused by irritation of the tendons.

Another knee problem is called Iliotibal Band Syndrome.  The iliotibial band is a thick band of tissue that runs from the hip to the outer side of the tibia or shin bone ending just below the knee joint.  This band of fibrous tissue is crucial in providing stability to the knee joint, especially when running. 

Normally this band glides over the bone smoothly supplying support to the knee.  However, if the Iliotibal Band is inflamed, repetitive movement like running or cycling can cause this tissue to not glide smoothly and result in pain when the joint is moved.
Most injuries can take a considerable amount of time to heal. This can be from weeks to months and may require knee injury therapy.

There are simple ways to reduce or prevent these sorts of knee injuries.  Here are a few:

    a/ Warm up and stretch before vigorous exercise and ensure you take time to cool down and stretch after exercising.
    b/ Build up your exercise routine gradually.  Start by exercising lightly and slowly increase the intensity.
    c/ Ensure your knees and feet are in alignment while exercising.
    d/ Strengthen your leg muscles so they can provide more stability and support for your knee.
    e/ Wear suitable shoes that provide stability and cushioning.
     f/ Don’t exercise on hard surfaces.
    g/ If cycling ensure the seat is correctly set up for you legs and pedals.

If pain lasts for more than 72 hours then it is advisable to seek medical advice.

Treatment for Knee Pain

This article provides information on treatment of knee pain as well as on ways to prevent knee, back and muscle pain.

Today almost everyone seems to be walking around with some sort of pain, ache or general issue with one body part or another. I get no better satisfaction than quickly clearing up injuries. If you have been suffering with a pain for a while now I would urge you to make a stand and vow to get over it. The majority of pains occur because of a mixture of four main factors:

In all injuries you will find one or more the muscles in the area are tight, this pulls on the joint and subjects it to undue stress. The resultant effect is a nagging pain and injury. The effect of tight muscles is often seen in knee pain, if for example you took a blow on the knee, say in a fall, you would be temporarily out of action. The result is that the muscle stiffens up (outside thigh muscle), it is then this stiff muscle that become the cause of the pain. I often meet people who blame their injuries on a fall two years ago. Unless there was actual damage to the bone structures involved the actual pain is infact from the muscle tightness that they failed to address.

The good news is stretching the tight muscles can rapidly bring relief in such situations. Back pain is the same, but there are more muscles that could be tight and in need of balancing

 Weak or sleeping muscles .

A weak muscle usually comes hand in hand with a tight one. When a muscle is weak it cannot hold the joint in place. In knee pain it is the weakness in the muscle just above the knee, on the inside thigh that causes the pain to continue. Often knee injuries can be cleared up by simply strengthening this one thigh muscle.

Sleeping muscles are often a problem in injuries. When a joint or area is injured the muscle nearest to the area is down regulated by the body in an attempt to protect the joint. The idea being if the muscle is not working correctly the joint will not be moved as much thus protecting it from further injury.

This is seen a lot in the knee and spine where the muscles that hold these parts in place (tear drop thigh muscle and the core) are switched off by the pain in the area. Sleeping muscles are a catch twenty two because you need them awake to stop the pain. To reawaken them you must restore posture and muscle lengths through stretching. You will also need to concentrate on getting them working. It is also possible to use touch sensitivity, touch the muscle you want to use, while exercising to wake them up.


The nutritional state of your body greatly affects the health and degree of any pain in the joints. Often sleeping muscles around the spine are caused because of your digestive system has become irritated. This may be from eating poor food choices (non metabolically appropriate). Other joints are affected greatly by the general nutritional state of the body. People are always very keen to take a glucosamine supplement for their joints but not so enthusiastic to get their metabolic type and nutrition sorted. A much greater factor for joint pain than any supplement.

The mind is connected to the body, in this day and age we do not readily accept that as fact but joint pain can be a great case in point. Fracture of the knee can also be categorized as an acute knee injury, which can affect any of the bones that make up the knee joint. Fractures in the knee joint is usually serious and may require surgical intervention in order to repair it along with the joint being immobilized by a cast or other forms of support.

As for injuries of the ligaments, they are usually treated at first by immobilizing the affected knee and using ice packs, along with elevation and rest. If the injuries are severe, however, open surgery or arthroscopic surgery may be required to alleviate the knee pain. Tears of the meniscus usually need to be repaired by arthroscopic surgery.

Knee Pain Caused by Overload or Overuse Injuries

Knee pain is also caused by overload or over use injuries of the knees such as bursitis, tendonitis, and muscle strain, which can develop slowly over weeks or days. Initially, the knee pain is usually sporadic and mild, which becomes worse with time. When stress is caused on tendons and muscles, it results in tiny tears in them. The pain is caused by the resultant inflammation, which is part of the process of healing. These tears in the muscles and tendons must be given time to heal before performing similar activity that caused them. Overuse knee injuries should be treated promptly in order to prevent the knee pain becoming chronic.

The treatment for tendonitis involves immobilizing the knee with the help of a knee brace, ice packs, anti-inflammatory medications, and rest. Later therapeutic exercises can help in rehabilitating the tissues around and in the affected tendon. If a tendon in the knee is ruptured, however, it often requires surgery to repair it.

The treatment of bursitis in the knee is also ice packs, along with anti-inflammatory drugs and immobilization of the knee joint. Corticosteroid injections may also be given at the location, along with physical therapy to strengthen the muscles of the front area of the thigh.

Knee Pain Caused by Runners Knee

Also referred to as anterior knee pain or patellofemoral pain, runners knee is one of the most common causes of knee pain that affects young people. It is felt behind the patella, or the kneecap, and is a diffuse kind of pain. The pain usually worsens after running, jumping, climbing stairs, or after sitting for a period of time. Knee pain caused by runners knee is mainly treated by appropriate physical therapy exercises advised by a physical therapist or doctor. High-impact activity should be avoided in case you are suffering from runners knee.

Knee Pain Caused by Arthritis

Knee pain is also caused by various types of arthritis affecting the knee joint, such as osteoarthritis, which is non-inflammatory, wherein the cartilage of the knee degenerates, or the inflammatory kinds of arthritis like gout, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and so on. The treatment of these conditions has to be done according to the individual requirement of each.
