Ankle injuries have long been the dread of all athletes and sports professionals. One tumble could mean being out of action for more than 3 months, and sometimes even the end of a career. An estimated 1 in 10,000 people sustain an ankle injury each day, and some 5% do not fully recover. The typical sorts of ankle injuries that are commonly experienced fall into two categories: acute sprains or overuse injuries.

Acute injuries

Actions such as pivoting on the ankle can create extreme pressure on the ligaments, leading to tearing or disruption of the ankle’s outer ligament complex. The effects are immediate bleeding and swelling around the outer border of the ankle and difficulty in bearing weight. It is important to take quick action. In these cases conservative treatment is best. This includes:

Immediate rest

Ice compression

Elevation

Physiotherapy

Some specialists prefer a two to three week period immobilising the injured ankle in a walking plaster cast to reduce chronic instability and further problems. In either event, after six to twelve weeks, around 95% of these injuries go on to make a full recovery.

Overuse injuries

During any game of sport, the ankle is subjected to enormous pressure. Over time, a variety of injuries can occur. When repetitive minor injuries occur to the achilles tendon, swelling, inflammation and partial tears to the collagen fibres are produced. This condition, known as chronic achilles tendonitis is very difficult to cure. Such injuries are fairly common in the professional sporting arena. Treatment often involves long periods of rest, physiotherapy, the use of ultrasound and the modification of footwear.

In mildly arthritic or worn ankle joints, small pieces of bone may break off. This can present with pain, swelling, locking and a sensation of instability and occasionally the joint can give way.

Other overuse injuries to the ankle include the generation of bony spurs on the front of the ankle. This causes pinching within the ankle during running, particularly during the ‘heel-off phase of the running cycle.

For those who have injured themselves whilst playing sport, it is best to stop playing immediately as continuing can further aggravate the injury. As a rule, it is generally unwise to run through pain in the ankle or achilles. Pain is, after all, the body’s way of telling us that something is wrong. Similarly, if joints are regularly locking, clicking or giving way, this is an indication that something may be amiss. What must be taken into account is that during exercise the body secretes its own morphine-like substances which can mask the pain arising from a damaged joint, muscle or tendon. Such parts of the body normally issue signals of pain because there is an underlying problem. Athletes ignoring such symptoms are more likely to develop further problems later in their careers. Resting, applying ice and some compression to the injured ankle whilst elevating it will ensure that no further immediate damage is done.

If, after a course of physiotherapy, symptoms fail to settle down after the usual six to twelve week healing period, sports professionals who continue to get pain, swelling, clicking or locking in their ankle after this period should seek referral to a specialist for treatment. X-rays and magnetic scans of the ankle are taken to access the joint and detect conditions such as residual ligament instability, the presence of bony spurs forming at the front of the ankle joint, loose bodies or scar tissue.

Until five to ten years ago surgery was a lengthy and painful ordeal. Surgery required the patient to stay in hospital, certainly overnight and more usually for two or three days. In order to access the joint, the surgeon had to make a fairly large incision, which, combined with the effects of the general anaesthetic added to the recuperation period. Furthermore, the patient left hospital on crutches, often in plaster, with a sizeable scar. In practice, very few ankle injuries could be treated and the results of

surgery were often unsatisfactory. The joint was just too small for the instruments available and for surgeons to see inside the joint.

The future of ankle surgery

Technological developments have led to ankle arthroscopy or keyhole surgery, which has transformed the treatment of ankle injuries. Two or three tiny holes are made around the ankle, into which 2mm wide fibre-optic scopes are fed. Surgeons are able to carry out the intricate range of repairs and procedures whilst watching the operation onscreen. This type of surgery can usually be undertaken as a daycase procedure. Patients typically experience very little post-operative pain and are able to walk out of hospital with no difficulty.

Results are better, there is less discomfort involved, shorter hospital stays, lower complication rates and shorter recovery times. The cosmetic results are better

too n very often just a couple of tiny scars that are barely visible or quickly fade. Rest and elevation of the limb is prescribed for the first 48 hours, followed by a supervised physiotherapy programme.

Ankle arthroscopy has revolutionised the work of the orthopaedic surgeon, both in diagnostic techniques and in surgery. Both standard x-rays and magnetic scans miss problems in the ankle, particularly where the damage is to the soft tissue. Arthroscopy as a diagnostic tool is virtually 100% accurate, enabling exactly the right treatment to be administered. The success rate of the treatment is also high. For example, the pain of soft tissue lesions can be alleviated in 84% of case whilst arthroscopic ankle fusions carry a 95% fusion rate. Sprains, fractures, torn ligaments, rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative disease, loose bodies and bone spurs can all be treated by this method.

Here are some simple homes remedies that will help you cope with your disease. Some of these remedies help with pain, while other are known to help with the swelling and inflammation so commonly experienced with rheumatoid arthritis.

1.    Consuming cayenne pepper can bring relief from the pain.

2.    Drinking one cup of fresh pineapple juice daily can reduce the swelling of joints.

3.    Massaging the joints with warm coconut oil mixed with a few pieces of camphor can help remove the stiffness and pain.

4.    Drinking potato juice regularly is known to cure rheumatoid arthritis. However, further reading is recommended on this before trying it.

5.    Garlic is an anti oxidant and helps in reducing the inflammation.

6.    Grind four peeled pieces of garlic, along with two grams of Sprague. Dip this mixture in 30 grams mustard oil and heat, on low flame, for 1-2 minutes. Massage the aching joints with this oil, after cool it down, to get relief from pain and swelling.

7.    Rheumatoid arthritis can be cured by overwhelming a few grams of fresh or powdered ginger per day, along with water.

8.    Add 4 tbsp of Epsom salt to your bath, filled with warm water. Bathing with this water will help reduce irritation and stiffness of joints.

9.    Massaging with castor oil also reduces the pains, thereby providing relief from arthritis.

My dad is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis with severe arthritis pain in knee joint, which is commonly known as Osteo Arthritis. Now he has a trust factor on me as he got some positive results after leaving Ice cream, now he is asking me for a diet which could help in reducing joints pain of osteo arthritis and get a perfect arthritis cure.

I asked him to avoid nightshade vegetables, as they are very harmful in osteo arthritis and also in rheumatoid arthritis. I told him that nightshade vegetables are those vegetables that grow in night, these vegetables contains a natural chemical solanine. Solanine is a gift of nature to vegetables that grows in night to prevent people from eating them. Solanine is actually toxic in nature and is found to be a major factor in increasing joint pain in the body. So nightshade vegetables should be avoided in all forms of arthritis.

My dad is now showing a sort of interest in knowing more about nightshade vegetables, I told him about list of vegetables included in nightshade vegetables category are Peppers, Potatoes, Ground Cherries, capsicum, Tobacco, Eggplant, Garden Huckleberry and some other vegetables.

I also asked him to quit his smoking habit in osteo arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Smoking is also a major factor which reduces synovial fluid and makes joint stiff. Smoking is very harmful in arthritis and must be avoided. My dad also loves rice and when I asked him to replaced polished rice with Brown rice, he was not actually happy with me. But I asked him to follow my instructions to avoid nightshade vegetable, tobacco, ketchup, smoking and Polished rice in arthritis diet for only few days.

My dad is actually not happy with me and I know he is very stubborn, he angrily ask me nothing is left to eat in arthritis joint pain. I was prepared for this statement and I readily provide him the list of vegetables diet for arthritis pain relief and the list includes Green Beans, Okra (Lady Finger), Cauliflower, Carrots, Green Lettuce, Asparagus, Spinach, Soybeans, meat(not red meat), black-eyed peas, lentils and other Starchy Root Vegetables.

The fruits suitable in arthritis joint pain relief includes melons, peaches, cherries (not ground cherries), blueberries Arctium Lappa Fruit, guava, mango, all varieties of grapes and oranges.

Dry fruits suitable for people with arthritis pain includes only  Peanuts and almonds.

I love how much sports and physical hobbies can do for a growing person still in their youth. An acute injury is sudden and typically unexpected. This includes a sprain, a strain, a broken bone, a skinned knee, a cut, or even a bruise. There are plenty of causes for this kind of injury. An athlete may run into another play on the field. They may twist their ankle while stumbling forward to retrieve a basketball. They may simply slip and fall down.

It’s important when acute injuries happen to address them immediately—this is why properly-prepared teams have medical staff at the scene to respond immediately. Refusing to acknowledge an injury that seems minor often leads to it becoming a serious problem later.

Overuse injuries, as the name implies, occur when a specific body part or muscle is overused and over trained. The impact of a repetitive unnatural motion over time adds up, and the end result is an injury that can often be long-lasting—perhaps for the rest of their lives. One common cause of this these days is that an increasing number of children are playing one sport all year instead of varying up their play between different activities as the seasons pass. If your child starts experiencing a slight pain in a certain part of their body that never leaves or keeps reappearing, this may be a sign they are developing an overuse injury—and even more telling is when the body part specifically relates to the sport they’ve been training in (such as a baseball pitcher constantly complaining of a sore elbow). In most cases, the pain will continue to increase as time goes by, and if they take time to let it heal, they may find it flares up again when they return to activity.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, it’s crucial to get your child looked at by a doctor immediately. Keep in mind that even if an injury starts out as an acute injury, it can become a long-term injury which does not go away. Any time they have physical symptoms, severe pain, immobility, or even inhibited ability, it may be time to speak with an expert. Sports are very beneficial for our children, but as always, safety is beneficial and important as well. Focus on achieving both.

For basic joint pain relief NSAID also known as non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, glucosamine, chondroitin, and others are prescribed by doctors. For other treatment options, physical therapy, orthopedic bracing, changes in lifestyle, joint replacement surgery or arthroplasty are just some of the means used in helping sufferers to live and lead a quality life.

But some medications when in excess can bring forth many complications especially for the kidneys. Also, some people don’t get the relief they wanted from these drugs. Others dread the long term effect of synthetic drugs for their health and so, they resort to alternative and natural medications to manage joint pain.

For one, acupuncture has benefited millions of people all over the world. Acupuncture can work for other chronic pain diseases as well. It works by the principle of targeting body areas to release good body chemicals that can combat pain. Also, it has been suggested that acupuncture shuts off pain receptors in the body.

Vitamin c is also essential in pain management. Vitamin c protects the joints from more adverse effects brought about by the wear and tear subjected to the joints. It also plays an important role in the production of bone and cartilage.

Your physician can advice you if discontinuing certain medications can be detrimental for you. Also, you cannot be sure if taking medications and herbal supplements at the same time can result to chemical reactions that can be poisonous for you.

Nearly 70 million people in the United States suffer from Arthritis and chronic joint symptoms that counts for about one in every three adults, making it one of the most prevalent diseases in the United States. The number of arthritis patients will be increasing in the near future as the population ages.


What is arthritis?

Arthritis is one of the most pervasive diseases in the United States and is the leading cause of disability. Arthritis (‘arth’ meaning joint, ”it. is” meaning inflammation) consists of more than 100 different conditions that can cause pain in the body’s muscles and joints. Arthritis symptoms include joint pain, inflammation and limited movement of joints. When a joint is inflamed it may be swollen, tender, warm to the touch or red. A damaged, narrowed and degenerated cartilage causes joint arthritis. The cartilage may be lost by the degenerative process or by inflammation making joint movement a painful process. An inflamed joint may be swollen, tender, warm to the touch or red.

Some forms of arthritis cause mild symptoms which can be controlled with proper care and treatment, for example tendinitis (as in ”tennis elbow”) and bursitis. Others are very serious and if left untreated may lead to severe disability, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Each type has a unique treatment program but the common factor among all types of arthritis is its earlier diagnosis. Earlier the diagnosis, sooner the treatment can be started, to avoid disability and permanent damage.


Major types of arthritis.

There are more than 100 classified types of arthritis or rheumatic disease. The most common ones include the following:


Osteoarthritis:

Osteoarthritis (OA), or degenerative joint disease, is one of the oldest and most common types of arthritis. It is characterized by the breakdown of the joint’s cartilage. Cartilage breakdown causes pain and movement loss because of the rubbing of bones against each other in the absence of the cartilage. It ranges from very mild to very severe and commonly affects middle-aged and older people. OA’s main target is hands and weight-bearing joints such as knees, hips, feet and the back.


Rheumatoid Arthritis:

Another common form of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis is typically chronic, meaning longer lasting. RA causes the inflammation in the lining of the joints and/or other internal organs, affecting many different joints, which causes pain, stiffness, warmth, redness and swelling. Bone and cartilage get invaded and damaged by the inflamed joint lining, the synovium, while the inflammatory cells release enzymes that may digest bone and cartilage. Loss of shape and alignment of the joint, causes pain and movement loss.


Some other major types of arthritis include:

Anklyosing Spondylitis, Cervical Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Gout, Infectious Arthritis, Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lumbosacral Arthritis, Osteonecrosis, Osteoporosis, Paget’s Disease, Psoriatic Arthritis, Reiter’s Syndrome, Rheumatic Diseases, Rheumatoid Foot and Ankle.


How to fight arthritis?

A chronic disease, arthritis can become a companion for a long time and maybe one’s lifetime. Fortunately, arthritis can be managed through a combination of medication, exercise, rest, weight-management, nutrition, and, in some cases, surgery. By avoiding excessive stress, using assistive devices to help you around the house and staying at your ideal weight will help relieve pressure on your hips and knees and protecting your joints.
